ICYMI: Bayh Hammers Bad Trade Deals on Labor Day Stops

Press Release

Date: Sept. 6, 2016
Location: Indianapolis, IN

Evan Bayh used the Labor Day holiday to stand up for working people in Indiana, campaigning against bad trade deals and the outsourcing of Hoosier jobs to countries like China and Mexico. Trade is a central issue in the race, and a clear contrast between Evan and his opponent, Congressman Todd Young. Congressman Young took campaign cash from Carrier executives even after they laid off thousands of Hoosier workers to move their jobs to Mexico, and has been an advocate of trade with no protections whatsoever for Hoosier workers.

WANE:
"I love him. I voted for him three times before when he was running," Bayh supporter Karla Stranger said.

Democratic candidate for Senate, Evan Bayh greeting supporters at Headwater's Park Monday, September 5.

At the event, Bayh shared his strong opinions about trade agreements, specifically the Trans-Pacific Partnership, an agreement among twelve Pacific Rim countries.

"I don't think we should have any more trade agreements until we enforce the ones we've got," he said.

Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette:
Speaking to reporters, Bayh talked about Hoosier jobs and trade.

"I think too many of our jobs have been shipped overseas … and we can't compete because too many of our foreign competitors are cheating, quite frankly," Bayh said. But Bayh also noted he does not think the U.S. should create more trade agreements until it enforces the ones it has.

"We lose about $200 billion a year on intellectual property. … American businesses, Hoosier companies have invested, they've innovated, they created new goods and services and they're just ripped off. We can't stand by and let that happen."

WFFT:
"I'm running because our middle class is hard-pressed," says Bayh. "I want to make college more affordable like we did when I was governor with the 21st Century Scholars. So many families struggle to make that possible for their children and their grandchildren."

Bayh went on to say, "Those are the things I'm fighting for and the things I hope to accomplish if I have the privilege of representing us."

WPTA:
Evan Bayh, a long-time governor and senator from Indiana, and who is now running for U.S. Senate again, came to the picnic saying what many in the crowd wanted to hear, that we're shipping too many jobs overseas.

"Not because we can't compete, but because too many of our foreign competitors are cheating quite frankly. I don't think we should have any more trade agreements until we enforce the ones we've got," Bayh said.

Kokomo Tribune:
Bayh was then introduced to a standing ovation. Bayh was a late-comer to the race, entering the fold in July after previous Democratic candidate for senate, Baron Hill, dropped out of the running to replace retiring Republican Sen. Dan Coats. Bayh will face Republican candidate Rep. Todd Young in November.
…

Bayh then spoke about making college more affordable and defended the Affordable Care Act and the auto industry bailout. He also railed against the Trans-Pacific Partnership and Carrier's move to Mexico.

"I've come to be with you here today, and I hope you'll vote for me, but that's not what this is all about," he said. "I've really come to be with you here today in Kokomo to say this is not about us or the political parties. I'm here today to ask you to vote for yourselves."
